The Pit Bull is JUST a dog like any other and is not all good or all bad. My specialty is training Pit Bulls and their guardians. To date, I have fostered and trained hundreds of Pit Bulls and Dobermans. I am The Pit Bull Empress and proud mother of a Pit Bull, Doberman, Mini Pin and Terrier. I foster one or two Pit Bulls, regularly. All of my dogs are rescues. "Bully Dogs", in addition to, Doberman Pinschers, are my favorite breeds.

DO NOT PUNISH THE BREED, BUT THE DEED.

There are many reasons why you should get a Bully Breed:

The Pit Bull is a dog who tries extremely hard to please his master.

They like to be loved and they can take rough love.

They are quiet and do not bark.

You will get a great work out each time to walk your Pit.

They are great dogs for families with children. Bullies are extremely tolerant, sturdy with lots of rough energy for even the most rowdy children.

Grooming made easy. They shed minimally.

Climate changes are not a problem. They easily adjust to the indoors and outdoors.

They are beautiful inside and outside. Muscle, Brains, and Soul.

Need security? You got it. A threatening person is sure to pass over your home.

They are the perfect company.

Pit Bulls adore people and will do anything for them.

For information on the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, visit: http://www.akc.org/breeds/staffordshire_bull_terrier/index.cfm

"Temperament from the past history of the Staffordshire Bull
Terrier, the modern dog draws its character of indomitable courage, high
intelligence, and tenacity. This, coupled with its affection for its friends,
and children in particular, its off-duty quietness and trustworthy stability,
makes it a foremost all-purpose dog. The American Staffordshire Terrier
should give the impression of great strength for his size, a well put-together
dog, muscular, but agile and graceful, keenly alive to his surroundings. His
courage is proverbial. (akc.org). In England Pit Bulls were the Baby
sitter breed and the dog to protect families and their children from wild
animals. The first dog in the White House was a Pit Bull. Thomas Jefferson loved
his bully breed. There is nothing as loving, loyal, kind, gentle and powerful as
a Pit
Bull. These dogs have feelings just like people but these feelings are
very powerful."

BEFORE GETTING A PIT BULL, ASK YOURSELF THIS QUESTION:
"AM I A LEADER OR A FOLLOWER"? IF THE ANSWER IS LEADER, GET A PIT. IT IS NEVER THE DOG, ALWAYS THE GUARDIAN.

Guarding a Pit Bull or any dog means that you have extra responsibilities and need to be willing to make sacrifices. You have a Pit Bull, so you must keep emotions out of this relationship. All dogs act and react. It is their nature. Dogs live in the moment. Bad dogs are not born, they are made. Dogs do not premeditate or reason. They just react to stimuli. WOW sounds easy doesn't it? Well, it's not easy at all. The biggest mistakes are made by guardians who think they know it all from books and/or watching the Dog Whisperer. Yeah right. Good luck to you and your neighbors. All actions of your dog are a reflection of you, the guardian. Remember Love for your Pit Bull is important, but Exercise and Structure MUST ALWAYS COME first. Mistakes made in raising and training your bully are human mistakes and not the dogs.

EXERCISE, STRUCTURE AND LOVE.

Your bully breed might genetically be dispositioned to dog aggression. Therefore, it is vital for you to know, at all times, how to control your Bully. CONNECTION, CONNECTION, CONNECTION. NO EMOTIONS ALLOWED. You have to connect with your dog and find the right way in doing so.

KEEP IN MIND.

NO NO, NO dog parks. If you like dog parks, this is not the breed for you.

Do not assume your dog will not fight.

NEVER leave your Pit Bull unattended with other people's dogs - even if they are best friends.

NO over-excitement is allowed.

NEVER let your dog stare at other dogs.

Stop fights immediately and never allow your Pit to have the upper hand in any situation.

NEVER leave your Bully alone with strange dogs.

PIT BULL 101: KEEP EMOTION OUT OF THIS RELATIONSHIP.

This breed is great when trained at a very young age. It is, definitely, easier to train and socialize a Pit Bull as a puppy. Nevertheless, it is possible to train an older dog or rescue dog as well. I do it all the time. This will take more patience and tenacity than a puppy who can be shaped from the beginning. However, keep in mind that a fully matured male Pit Bull is best to get, if this is your first Bully Breed.

This breed’s temperament changes often at the age of two and females are more prone to aggressive behavior. However, keep in mind that puppies are quite a handful. Pups of the bully breed can be quite rough. It is of great help to have another matured Pit Bull or even other dogs in a training environment to show your Pit Puppy the ropes.

Many Pit Bull rescuers will tell you to adopt a Pit Bull who is older. The reason for this is that all signs of aggression are already known in an adult Pit. However, it is with no doubt easier to get a puppy especially if you have another dog in your household. Aggression towards other animals (here I emphasize other animals only) is a genetic disposition in the Pit Bull. I've accomplished bringing together my adult Doberman male, Mini Pin and Terrier with an aggressive adult female Pit rescue dog. They are best friends and live happily - in harmony.

ATTENTION:

This is not the breed to get if it is your very first dog. If you decide to get a Pit Bull as your first dog, please be smart and hire a trainer who can train you and your bully breed. Seek out a Pit Bull Specialist - someone who knows all about the breed. Certificates will not do justice in Pit Bull training. EXPERIENCE IS THE KEY. You want a Pit Bull experienced person - someone who rescues, works with, or has a Pit Bull.

TRAINING YOUR PIT BULL.

Always keep in mind that you should create a calm environment when training your Bully. Remember, dogs live in the now, act and react. Past and present does not matter to your Pit Bull. You must learn to have an intimate connection with your Bully. Dogs feed off energy and they know what you're thinking. Yes, they read your mind and energy. Therefore, connect on that level and you'll have a soul mate for a long time.

I believe, most of all, in positive reinforcement and reward-based training. Nevertheless, I disagree that this is the only way to train a dog.

Pit Bulls are like all other dogs. The difference in a Bully is that they are powerful beyond belief. Force cannot be abolished when training a Bully. You must learn to use force without inflicting pain. There are phenomenal training devices on the market. Make eye contact and use force in the correct way. Your Pit will appreciate it.

Bully bodies are strong, muscular, fast and show no warning signs when they attack. However, if you are a well trained Pit Bull guardian, you must know this: Animal aggression is in a Pit Bull’s genetic make up.

PRONG COLLARS ARE A MUST.

Force is seen as leadership and your Pit Bull will understand it just that way. The leader of a pack uses force to establish the hierarchical ladder. I've never trained a Pit Bull without using force. I do not know of a trainer who has. If anyone can inform me of such a person, please contact me as I would love to witness this.

THE FOLLOWING BEHAVIORS ARE NEVER ALLOWED:

Whining for food toys or anything else.

Constant barking.

Jumping on people or any other dog, at any given time.

Your Pit is not allowed on furniture unless you invite.

Uninvited jumping in bed to wake you up.

Growling at anything including toys, food, people and other dogs.

Begging for food or even worse - eating off your plate.

NO AGGRESSION OR DOMINANCE OVER A HUMAN BEING, AT ANY TIME!!!!!!!!!!!
STRUCTURE.

Walk and feed your Pit. Not the opposite way around. Dogs need to work for their food and walks are seen as work. Walk first and then feed. Pits are high energy dogs and need long walks, especially in the morning.

Keep your Pit on a leash at all times. No dog parks or off leash areas are allowed. Let a professional socialize your Pit. Your Bully must walk either behind you or right by your side, at all times.

Treats are not necessary. Only give treats for work (training), things well done and good behavior.

Do not let your Pit do anything you do not want. It is YOUR HOME, not the Pits.

Crate train your Bully. Pits feel safe in small spaces. There will be times when you want your Pit to not run around the house.

FOOD: DO NOT LEAVE FOOD ON THE FLOOR.

Your Pit has to learn to eat when you feed. Give your Pit ten minutes to eat, then take the food bowl away. All my dogs eat within five minutes. There is never food left and the bowls are licked clean, at all times. Do not let your Pit go into food bowls of your other dogs.

LOVE.

Love your Pit Bull with all your heart and see this precious creature as your most prized "possession". A healthy and happy Pit Bull is a reflection of who you are…FOLLOWER or LEADER.

There is so much more to this than you think!

"If you chose a Bully Breed, please do it for the right reasons. See your dog
as your most valuable and precious friend. This can be the perfect and most
rewarding relationship you'll ever have. This is a very special companion. This
breed as well as the Doberman Pinscher, is very loving and kind. Pit
Bulls need and require love as well as structure. Be a pround Pit Bull
guardian and treat your Pit with all the respect it deserves."
